Geodetic Benchmarks: A Topic for Scientific Legacy in the Future

The geodetic benchmarks played (still play) crucial role for each country’s surveying and cartographic infrastructure. They build the basis for the precise positioning, using the classical measurements (spatial distances and angular quantities). However, the advent of GNSS and especially the use of Real Time Positioning (RTK), as well as techniques like Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) or LIDAR seem to restrain the necessity of the geodetic benchmarks. Nonetheless, it would be a major drawback if one considers that the geodetic benchmarks are obsolete. First of all, they remain as the basis of each county’s geodetic studies and they are practically independent of any possible problem of the newly arrived technologies. Secondly, it could be deemed as a kind of scientific heritage that any country should protect and bring out. We discuss the maintenance and the emergence of the geodetic benchmarks in Greece through a GIS application for various types of geodetic benchmarks.
