The chapter addresses the impacts of climate change with a very broad vision of the national territory, considering two large regions: mountain and lowland landscapes. Climate projections for Venezuela indicate rising temperatures and altered rainfall patterns, threatening agricultural productivity and ecosystem health. The Venezuelan Andes are highly sensitive, with significant risks of crop displacement, ecosystem fragmentation, and soil erosion. Crop suitability will decline for staples like potatoes, coffee, cocoa, and bananas, potentially leading to loss of agricultural zones and increased intervention in natural ecosystems. Water scarcity, glacier retreat, and hydrological changes will undermine irrigation and water security in mountainous and lowland regions. Forests, including the Amazon, face risks of biome shifts, biodiversity loss, and reduced carbon sequestration capacity. Coastal ecosystems, such as mangroves, are vulnerable to sea level rise and erosion, impacting fisheries and local livelihoods. Livestock and fisheries are also threatened by increased disease, habitat loss, and changing ocean conditions. Remarkably, there are significant gaps in region-specific research, emphasizing the need for localized data, technological advances, and participatory adaptation strategies.
