Venezuelan Agriculture under Climate Change, Territorial Transformation and Economic Contraction: An Introduction

This chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of the current state of agriculture in Venezuela in the context of climate change and economic collapse. Over the past two decades, the country has experienced a drastic contraction in agricultural production due to structural economic deterioration, land expropriations, scarcity or absence of agricultural inputs, fuel shortages, and a weakened institutional framework. While greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture, primarily methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), have declined, this trend is not attributed to mitigation efforts but rather to a sharp decline in rice cultivation and cattle farming. The chapter highlights how land-use change, deforestation, and the degradation of rural infrastructure have exacerbated environmental vulnerability and reduced adaptive capacity. It also presents territorial transformation processes like spatiotemporal data on land cover change (loss of 3.5 million ha of forest cover) and surface water loss (0.6 million ha), pointing to long-term environmental pressures in Venezuela. The analysis underscores the urgent need for a transition toward climate-smart agriculture, emphasizing sustainable land management, technological innovation, and rural investment. Without such a shift, any future recovery in production could trigger a rebound in GHG emissions, undermining sustainability goals and increasing environmental degradation. The chapter concludes with policy recommendations to restore food security, resilience, and environmental balance in Venezuelan agriculture.
