The relevance of notions of “a native speaker” and “native speakerism”, Lingua Franca English, as well as the importance of making students aware of and familiar with different variants of English pronunciation, are studied. In order to determine learners’ attitudes to various pronunciation models, namely American English and British English, a survey was conducted among the students. The survey demonstrated a mismatch between the students’ preferences, who either feel neutral regarding the variety which should be taught at university or opt for American English, giving British English a third of votes, and teachers’ opinions, who preach and teach British English. This mismatch might be a hindrance to learners’ full grasp and command of Global English, especially if alternative pronunciation is considered erroneous. The survey also considered the reasons why students and instructors preferred one variety over another.
