Einstein’s Tower and Miethe’s Dome
摘要
Due to the general theory of relativity, solar research returns to Telegraphenberg after a long pause. Despite Schwarzschild's unsuccessful attempt to measure the gravitational redshift of a solar nitrogen line, Einstein's insistence leads to the construction of the architecturally sensational Einstein Tower for the same purpose which, however, also fails to achieve resounding success. Its mastermind, Erwin Freundlich, was expelled to Istanbul byDirector Ludendorff in the autumn of 1933. After the start of the WWII, Harald von Klüber converted the tower telescope to measure solar magnetic fields, and this lonely decision determined the research profile of the Astrophysical Observatory until its end.
