Lateral violence is violence that we do to others within our own community—people who share the same experiences, discrimination, oppression, and barriers as we do. This chapter explores the factors that develop and influence the perpetuation of lateral traumas in the Deaf community. The use of social media and the rumor mill (gossiping) in the Deaf community mean that private information is always available. As such, clients are retraumatized again and again by the constant interrogations and disbelief of members of their own community and lack of awareness of the pain being caused. This is complicated by the dearth of mental health practitioners fluent in ASL and trauma that can help clients manage the originating event as well as the horizontal trauma that follows. This chapter discusses the factors that contribute to lateral violence in the Deaf community, moving beyond internal flaws to systemic oppression.

摘要
