Mental Health and Deaf LGBTQ Adults
摘要
This chapter introduces readers to historical, contemporary, and emerging issues in mental health, illness, and wellness among Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer-identified (LGBTQ) people and communities. Through a discussion of research, practice, and anecdotal findings, the authors aim to increase readers’ knowledge and understanding of psychological health risks and protective factors among DHH LGBTQ adults. The authors introduce factors that influence the mental health of DHH LGBTQ individuals, explore research on a number of commonly presenting psychology issues, and discuss barriers gender-nonconfirming DHH individuals encounter when seeking mental health services. This chapter concludes by highlighting potential treatment approaches and suggested clinical and policy-level recommendations.
