Deaf mental health care is a specialty field that requires self-awareness, knowledge, skills, and experience to serve the mental health needs of the deaf community. The number of providers with this expertise is growing, yet there remains a shortage of services to adequately meet the mental health needs of the deaf community. Research and practice in the specialty fields of forensic psychology, substance abuse, partner violence, trauma processing, and parent–child relationships will be discussed to highlight important progress in the practice of providing specialty mental health care for the deaf community and the continued critical need for continued research and specialized clinical practice in this field.
