Asthma
摘要
Asthma is a heterogeneous disease with chronic inflammation of the airways. It is characterized by variable exploratory airflow limitation with symptoms like cough, wheezing, dyspnea, and chest tightness that vary over time and in intensity. Usually, bronchial hyperresponsiveness is present with chronic inflammation. Variable airflow limitation may become persistent over the years. Asthma is reported in about 350 million people worldwide. The mortality rate due to asthma is given as 1 in 250 deaths and is reported as 250,000–280,000 per year. The World Health Organization has reported a loss of 15 million disability-adjusted life-years (DALY) worldwide due to asthma, compared to 1% of total losses related to all diseases in the world (Çelik et al., Thorac Res Pract. 24(6):309–24, 2023). In our country, prevalence ranges from 6% to 15% in children and between 2% and 17% in adults (Gemicioğlu B. Astım. In: İlçin G, Biberoğlu K, Süleymanlar G, Ünal S, editors. İç Hastalıkları. Baskı: Güneş Kitabevi, Ankara, 3; p. 735–54, 2012). Asthma can start in childhood or adulthood. Childhood asthma tends to begin before the age of 5 and is two times higher in boys than girls. At the age of 10–12, the proportion of boys and girls is equalized. In adults, asthma is a more common disease in women.
