Not much is known about the pathogenesis of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome. The etiology is thought to be complex, stemming from both local and systemic factors. Articular disc displacement and inherited disorders influencing the joint’s architecture, including hypoplastic mandibular condyles, are common causes of localized issues. Tallents et al. (J Prosthet Dent 75:529, 1996) discovered that while 33% of people without TMJ symptoms displaced their jaw joint, 84% of patients experiencing symptoms did so. Arthritis, rheumatoid, juvenile idiopathic, osteoarthritis, and articular disk disorders are among the ailments that can impact the TMJs. There are a number of additional factors that contribute significantly, including hypermobile TMJs, bruxism during sleep, jaw clenching as a result of psychological or social stress, and local trauma.
