Total laryngectomy (TL) involves severing the vocal tract and lungs from one another to eliminate the sound source. After a total laryngectomy (TL), finding a new source of sound that can be powered is crucial for restoring one’s voice. In addition to dealing with medical issues, patients with head and neck cancer have a host of practical and psychological challenges. Functional restoration is a significant secondary goal of therapy that impacts treatment for many patients with head and neck cancer, but cure remains the primary objective.
