Undocumented Workers’ Temporal Navigation
摘要
I take the ‘work permit’ as a point of departure for discussing undocumented migrants’ experiences as precaritized workers, and the tactics they engage for ‘getting by’ and producing a livelihood in Chapter 4. The (non)issuing of work permits to foreigners is discussed as a technology of migration control, which contributes to internalizing the border, and to multiplying its checkpoints. I zoom in on the temporal architectures which produce undocumented migrants as precarious workers, and how my interlocutors navigate a shifting terrain by recalibrating to different temporalities, while also circumventing them through practices of bricolage and débrouillardise.
