Introduction
摘要
This introductory chapter traces the historical arc from early automation to modern software, illustrating how technologies—initially designed as mere tools—have come to shape the very fabric of human life. Through the story of the Jacquard loom and its influence on computing, it explores how even modest design innovations can lead to far-reaching societal transformations. The chapter situates software as a distinct and paradigmatic form of technology, highlighting its ubiquity, opacity, and ethical significance. It argues that while software systems enable progress and efficiency, they also carry the power to reshape behaviors, social structures, and values—often invisibly. Ethical challenges in software development are rarely the result of malice; they stem more often from epistemic limitations or complex trade-offs. Drawing on real-world examples, the chapter makes the case for integrating ethical reflection into development processes from the outset. Rather than focusing only on harm prevention, it calls for a broader perspective that includes the cultivation of ethical excellence.
