Viewing statistics as the oldest and the most influencial science of current data science, including AI and machine learning, we elaborate upon some significant developments related to the pursuit of credibly empirical applications of data science with emphasis on demystifying hypothesis testing, relating coalitional games to the explanation of black box models, and evoking useful contributions of optimal transport theory to data analysis.
