Adopting an approach informed by German philosopher and phenomenologist Edith Stein’s Empathy Theory, this paper explores conceptual parallels between music and ‘lived experience,’ musicality and empathy. The concept of the meaningful transformation through lived experience is well described by Edith Stein in her Three Steps of Empathy theory. Stein further suggests that empathy is a way of feeling oneself into the experiences of another person. Empathy transforms and can imbue communication with a much deeper level of mutual understanding. I argue that concepts of transformation through lived experience and empathy are both present in music. In my view, empathy, as a way of tuning into other senses, is a synonym to musicality, as a sense and the way of qualitative construction of meaningful experience via embodied cross-modal listening within the chamber of human psychosomatic physical body, as well as the means of communication and harmonious existence in the world, as a sensory-experiential phenomenon.

摘要
