Vote and Seat Share and Social Basis of BJP in South India—A Retrospective Analysis of Electoral Performance

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections marked a vital moment for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in South India, where they secured 50 seats. The winning of 50 seats from South India played a significant role in forming the BJP-led government for the third time a midst a reduced majority at the national level. Among 49 seats, 19 are from Karnataka, 21 are from Andhra Pradesh, 8 are in Telangana, and 1 from Kerala. In Tamil Nadu, the NDA failed to secure a single seat. However, the BJP increased the vote share to 11%. The increasing electoral performance of NDA is a quantum jump from the 2014 and 2019 elections. The critical factors contributing to the NDA include a two-pronged electoral strategy, such as the alliance with the regional dynastic parties and local political parties and a direct electoral contest against the Congress party. The accommodation of the Congress and regional parties marginalized social groups, the Modi factor, and welfare policies fetched the dividend. The increasing Lok Sabha seats of NDA have been proving that BJP is not only coming out confining from the Hindi belt image but also localizing itself in South India.
