An election is best seen as a still picture of a moving reality. The chapters of this book capture parts of a vast and complex general election of 2024 with its continental stretch and astounding depth. Many of our authors cover the process from the peak of the electoral cycle which starts with the beginning of the campaign and ends with the swearing in of the new government. The challenge for the analyst is to infer long-term trends of the political system from the partial data that it generates. An even more difficult challenge is to look beyond the election to see what elections cannot deliver and why. This is an enormous task, well beyond the capacity of a single investigator. As such, in this book we have brought together a group of scholars whose locations are spread out over India, and whose diverse expertise and regional coverage help us map a significant part of the electoral process into our common endeavor. To get the investigative process started, we had shared a set of objectives and core questions spelt out in the introduction to this book. Beyond stating the main objectives of the study, we have let the authors follow their own storylines. The consequence is the rich body of findings that have been presented in the chapters. My intention in this epilogue is to draw some general implications from the findings reported in this book and indicate some issues for future research concerning the potential and limitations of elections to achieve democratic governance in changing societies.

摘要
