Understanding the Impact of Family Violence During Pregnancy
摘要
This chapter will examine the impacts of family violence during pregnancy. It will also explore the physical and mental health outcomes resulting from such violence and discuss nursing and midwifery practices related to managing violence around the time of pregnancy. Research on abuse during pregnancy has been extensive in the nursing and midwifery field. Initial studies aimed to determine the prevalence of intimate partner (IPV) and family violence during pregnancy and to compare disclosure rates across various instruments and methods. Later research explored the impact of IPV on maternal and infant health, as well as factors predicting IPV during pregnancy. Nurses, nurse-midwives, midwives and nurse practitioners have a critical role in identifying violence experienced by pregnant women. Pregnancy might be the only period when an abused woman has regular contact with a health professional who can provide support, advice and referral to support agencies. The nurse and midwife role can include identification, assessment, care planning, and ongoing support and follow-up. Within this chapter the terms domestic and family violence and intimate partner violence will be used interchangeably.
