The balance between supporting those who have committed offences to reintegrate into the community and public protection can be difficult. For those who have committed sexual offences, restrictions can increase stigma for this population and may be disproportionate or even counter-productive to any impact on desistance. This chapter focuses on two of the most salient themes from Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) with nine men who had been released from prison, following custodial sentences for sexual offence convictions: negotiating identity as a ‘sex offender’ and the negative impact of the ‘sex offender’ register/restrictions. Implications of the results are considered and some recommendations made for policy-makers and professionals working with this population.

摘要
