Despite decades of research on women in leadership, African and Coloured women continue to be under-represented at senior leadership levels in South African business organizations. The few that reach top leadership positions tend to exit their leadership roles just as they seem to have conquered the stubbornly masculine and racialized work environments. This renders truly inclusive and sustainable gender transformation elusive. In this chapter, we seek to disrupt some of the silences in leadership practice and scholarship. We draw on primary data from a doctoral research project, as well as our lived experiences as Black women gender transformation practitioners and researchers. Specifically, we show how the intersection of race, gender, social class, culture and age impacts the leadership experiences and career trajectories of different groups of women.
