Smart and Innovative Technologies for Waste Disposal: Tools for Sustainable Environmental Management
摘要
The world’s trash problem is a long-term issue and is not expected to be solved shortly. The traditional garbage management systems like incineration, landfill, composting, recycling, waste compaction, and underground disposal have their drawbacks and are not equipped to manage the huge waste generated by the current-day industrialization and population growth. The environment and human health can be harmed by improper waste collection, treatment, and disposal. The types of wastes that are generated, such as agricultural waste, municipal solid waste, hazardous waste, biomedical waste, industrial waste, and chemical waste, need to be disposed of in a nondetrimental way. Waste containing hazardous substances can endanger human health and harm the natural ecosystem. To solve this problem, efficient and sustainable waste management is becoming more and more crucial. Hence, to overcome the issue, it is required to adopt smart waste management technologies that can increase the management efficiency, minimize collection cost, and divert more and more waste away from the sanitary landfills. The smart innovative technologies for management of wastes are like ‘smart waste bins, waste level sensors, e-waste kiosks, pneumatic waste pipes, artificial intelligence (AI) recycling robots, garbage truck weighing mechanisms, solar powered trash compactors, recycling apps’,etc. It has been studied that start-ups have received grants of multimillion-dollar grants during the year 2021 to develop smart, environmentally friendly technologies. It is expected that the smart waste collection market to reach a revenue of about $4.5 billion in the year 2027. Further, the state governments are looking to adopt stringent waste recycling regulations. The present study aims to discuss the various smart and innovative waste management techniques for a sustainable and greener environment.
