Furthering the discussion of the ‘average man’ as the ‘ideal’ medical body in the previous chapter, this chapter will problematise the construction of the ‘average woman’. Just as with the ‘average man’, this body is constructed on normativenormative assumptions of whiteness, youth, able-bodiedness, and heterosexuality, creating a ‘standard’ woman against which all other women are measured. This chapter will consider how this impacts woman of colour both socially and medically.

摘要

Furthering the discussion of the ‘average man’ as the ‘ideal’ medical body in the previous chapter, this chapter will problematise the construction of the ‘average woman’. Just as with the ‘average man’, this body is constructed on normativenormative assumptions of whiteness, youth, able-bodiedness, and heterosexuality, creating a ‘standard’ woman against which all other women are measured. This chapter will consider how this impacts woman of colour both socially and medically.
