This chapter will explore how the normalisation of women’s painpain, and the ‘invisibility’ of chronic painchronic pain, produces a burden of disbeliefdisbeliefdisbelieving on women’s testimonies of pain. Exploring how epistemic authorityepistemic authority is maintained and exercised in the downgrading of women’s testimonytestimonytestimonytestimonies, it will consider the ways in which women are constructed as ‘unreliable narratorsunreliable narrators’ and ‘uncredibleuncredibleuncredible’ witnesses to their own bodies. It will also consider how women resist these narratives and the creative and complex strategies used to re-establish their credibilitycredibility.
