The Role of Collaboration in Virtual Quality Control Training: Effects on Engagement and Effectiveness

Virtual Reality (VR) technology significantly improves workforce training by offering realistic and immersive simulations. Despite their potential, most VR-based industrial training focuses on individual scenarios, while real-world industrial tasks often require collaboration. In this study, collaborative interactions within VR quality control training were investigated to address this gap. Using a between-subjects experiment, we compared solo and collaborative conditions in a realistic conveyor belt inspection scenario. Metrics such as immersion, enjoyment, cognitive workload, usability, learning outcomes, co-presence, and social presence were evaluated. Although not statistically significant, the results suggested beneficial trends in collaborative VR in immersion, workload, and learning improvements, while enjoyment was significantly higher in solo conditions. High copresence and social presence scores highlight VR’s effectiveness for realistic collaborative interactions. These findings underscore the potential of collaborative VR training and recommend further exploration in diverse industrial contexts.
