Worldwide Distribution of Reservoir Triggered Seismicity (RTS)
摘要
The first case of the scientifically acceptable occurrence of RTS was at Lake Mead reported way back in 1945 by Carder (Bull Seismol Soc Am 35:175–192, 1945), where an RTS magnitude 5 earthquakes had occurred in 1939. In the years to follow, several RTS cases were reported globally. A list of such cases was compiled by Gupta (Reservoir Induced Earthquakes, Elsevier, 364p, 1992) which included four sites where earthquake sequences with largest earthquake of M ≥ 6, six sites where M 5.0–5.9, twenty-three sites where M 4–4.9, and thirty-five sites where M < 4 earthquake occurred. Gupta ( Reservoir Induced Earthquakes, Elsevier, 364p, 1992) also listed 8 sites where consequent to filling of the artificial water reservoir, a decrease in seismicity was noticeable. Wilson et al. (Seismol Res Lett 88:1560–1565, 2017) reported close 730 sites where anthropogenic activity related earthquakes occurred. In their listing mining and artificial water reservoir related cases of induced earthquakes dominated. However, the listing lacked a strict scrutiny of the cases, said to be related with anthropogenic activities.
