Based on participant observation and a systematic collection of emotion narratives from adults and adolescents, this chapter describes patterns of social relationships in conjunction with emotion repertoires in Menamaty. It provides the immediate context for the analysis of children’s social world and developmental niche in the subsequent chapters. Starting from the observation that socio-emotional behaviour in Menamaty is most clearly distinguished along the lines of hierarchical and egalitarian relationships, the chapter focuses on these two forms. The hierarchical socio-emotional mode occurs among people of different ages, particularly across generations. It is characterized, among other things, by highly formalized, partly ritualized, and emotionally restrained interaction. The egalitarian socio-emotional mode is most pronounced between people of the same age and is characterized, in clear contrast to the hierarchical mode, by informal interaction, individual preferences, and emotional expressiveness. Both modes are further differentiated by gender and kinship. The chapter concludes by engaging with longstanding claims about cultures with independent and interdependent social orientations, arguing that in Menamaty, both modes are equally present but embedded in different contexts.
