This chapter examines how community participation and environmental awareness can be increased in Palestinian universities through non-formal education programs. The program discusses issues of climate change, pollution, and sustainability with the main aim of raising people’s environmental awareness regarding their issues among university students, employees, and the general society. The applied methodology increases the active participation of individuals in protecting the environment and shifting toward sustainable living. We suggest an integrated strategy to the introduction of environmental education in non-formal setups comprising experiential learning experiences such as internships, field studies, and community-based workshops. Collaboration with local governments, non-governmental organizations, and private enterprises is essential for initiating collaborative environmental activities and enlarging the education system for guaranteeing experiential learning and public involvement. The course will develop student leadership skills in sustainability and environmental change. Workshops with local communities will teach practical skills, such as water conservation, composting, and energy efficiency, while social media campaigns raise awareness about local environmental issues. A five-step implementation plan needs assessment, course development and integration, stakeholder outreach, activity implementation, and outcomes evaluation to ensure the program’s methodical development and long-term viability. There is a necessity to deal with possible financial, political, and institutional limitations for this project to succeed. In dealing with financial limitations, universities and colleges can tap finance options from global environmental organizations and establish collaborations with local corporations to split the costs. Political and institutional limitations can be dealt with through lobbying for policy changes, enhancing cooperation between universities and the government, and mainstreaming sustainability as a fundamental value in higher education. This chapter contributes to environmental education in Palestine by positioning universities as torchbearers of sustainability advocacy and outreach to communities.

摘要
