Modern information technologies, including smart devices, greatly simplify life. One notable area is elderly care. Through various IoT systems and methods, it is possible to enhance communication for the elderly, as well as their health care, safety, and participation in social initiatives. This paper discusses a platform designed specifically for elderly care. Its core characteristics include: meeting the fundamental functional requirements for elderly care; implementation using FIWARE components, making it an open system with numerous associated benefits; and the ability to handle Big Data and scale effectively as the volume of data and/or number of users increase. The latter was achieved on the basis of an innovative approach for building a scalable Big Data architecture based on FIWARE generic enablers that we have developed.
