Chapter Five traces 4ZZZ’s tumultuous journey from attempted eviction to eventual relocation. The station broadcast for approximately six months from a makeshift studio in a caravan next to its transmitter atop Mount Coot-tha, while it established itself in a new commercial location. ‘Shelter(s) from the Storm’ chronicles the physical, emotional, and technical challenges faced during this period, including the struggles of finding a new home, internal volunteer burnout, and tensions within the Collective. It also highlights the community’s spirited fundraising efforts, including benefit gigs, t-shirt campaigns, and strategic broadcast deals. Despite eventually securing a lease at Coronation Drive, Toowong, the location proved divisive and inadequate, fuelling further organisational stress and factionalism. Yet 4ZZZ stayed on air and began to rebuild its identity. The chapter culminates in the discovery of a promising future home in Fortitude Valley, that offered a new beginning after years of instability and underscored the station’s survivalist spirit in the face of political hostility and resource scarcity.
