This chapter introduces People Powered Radio, a thematic history of 4ZZZ, Brisbane’s oldest community radio station, as it celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025. Opening with the vibrant atmosphere of the 2025 Hot 100 Countdown Hangout Party, ‘You’re Listening to 4ZZZ’ captures the spirit of the radio station and its eclectic, activist-driven, and music-loving communities. It provides an accessible overview of the station’s legacy, from its beginnings in 1975 to its current role in amplifying alternative voices and independent music. Drawing on personal reflections, institutional milestones, and grassroots achievements, this chapter sets the tone for the rest of the book, which traces 4ZZZ’s technical, organisational, musical, and political contributions through a series of themed chapters. The introduction is both a celebration and an invitation to listen, participate, and reflect on the people-power of community media.
