The digitisation of cultural heritage enhances accessibility, enabling Cultural Heritage Institutions to share collections widely for research, education, and public engagement. This article reviews the literature on digitisation management in Europe, focusing on six areas: access and engagement, technology, legal and policy considerations, ethical considerations, skills and competencies, and sustainability. This critical literature review highlights benefits and risks, opportunities and challenges related to the digitisation of cultural heritage. Benefits include increased access and preservation, while challenges encompass framework gaps, copyright and ethical issues, and long-term digital preservation.
