Social Responsibility of Universities and a Crisis: The Actions of Wroclaw Medical University (Poland) in Response to the Migration Crisis Caused by the War in Ukraine
摘要
This article examines the role of Wroclaw Medical University (WMU) in responding to the migration crisis in Wrocław, Poland, triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The university's response involved coordinated efforts in providing refugees medical, educational, and infrastructural support while collaborating with local authorities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other higher education institutions. Through its actions, WMU exemplified how higher education institutions can integrate social responsibility into their crisis management strategies, ensuring both immediate and long-term aid to vulnerable populations. This study draws on primary and secondary data, including institutional documents, reports, interviews, and participant observations. It highlights the ethical and strategic dimensions of university social responsibility (USR), arguing that crises demand rapid adaptation, resource mobilization, and a redefinition of institutional priorities to meet emergent needs. The findings demonstrate that crises, such as wars and migration emergencies, introduce new dimensions of social responsibility, compelling universities to expand their scope of action and continuously assess the needs of affected communities. By leveraging their expertise, universities can play a critical role in both immediate relief efforts and long-term recovery, ultimately contributing to sustainable social change.
