This chapter addresses a major enigma of our capitalist societies: what explains the reproduction and expansion of an economic system that appears to systematically destroy life—human or other? The concepts of predatory accumulation and productive destruction have been proposed as theoretical frameworks that explain capitalist processes. Through the analysis of intensive farming in Spain, we address the contradictions that connect the accumulation of value, the reproduction of human and non-human nature, and the continuity of the political economic system. We conclude that a crucial aspect of value extraction and accumulation is the (dis)connection between production and reproduction, namely the fact that reproduction of the materials or energy used in production go unaccounted for in exchange. By connecting the devaluation of human and non-human resources and value accumulation, we seek to theoretically develop the interlocking aspects of value production and destruction and their potential effect on systemic social reproduction.
