The traditional way of categorizing government systems is by examining their political regimes, that is, the constitutional rules for power attribution. Systems in which the government is designated by parliament and is accountable to it are known as parliamentary regimes. Systems that have a strict separation of powers between the executive and legislative branches, both of which are independently elected, are known as presidential regimes. Semi-presidential regimes are hybrid political systems that combine the aspects of both previously mentioned systems.
