This chapter looks into the most common criticisms of Costa Rican democracy. We first discuss the downsides of each of the divide-and-survive institutional arrangements presented earlier before getting into some broader issues. We further argue that Costa Rica is not immune to democratic backsliding, but that its effects are not as pronounced, to a large degree, thanks to the divide-and-survive institutional arrangements presented above.
