Social capital refers to the support, information, and resources individuals can access through their relationships. While professional mentors themselves can serve as a valuable form of social capital for their mentees, they also may strengthen their impact by helping their mentees expand their networks of support. They can do this by acknowledging, honoring, supporting, and strengthening mentees’ existing connections and helping mentees cultivate and maintain new connections. In addition to building mentees’ networks of support, this approach can help mentees develop their own capacity to identify, cultivate, and draw on support throughout their lives.
