Positive youth development is defined as youth having the knowledge, skills, support, and meaningful attachments they need. The likelihood of positive development is increased by creating environments that foster healthy relationships, autonomy, empowerment, and purpose in their lives that allow youth to thrive socially, physically, and economically, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. The social development strategy focuses on creating positive opportunities, skills, and rewards that promote bonds to positive adults and institutions, which in turn lead to youth developing strong values. Mentors are uniquely positioned to assess the available opportunities and cultivate the development of necessary skills and the delivery of meaningful rewards for each individual child in the context of a warm, bonded relationship.
