Mentoring and Professionalization

This chapter presents the reflections of the editors of The Handbook on Professional Youth Mentoring. Professional mentors are salaried and benefited employees who work as mentors with small numbers of youth on a full-time basis. The handbook highlights the potential for the future of professional mentoring in a wide variety of contexts, including, but not limited to, mentoring focused on mental health, education, delinquency prevention, athletics, vocational development, social and emotional development, and the support of children of refugee status. Professional mentoring brings with it the promise of available time and energy, two resources that are not present in the lives of many volunteer mentors. It brings with it the promise of a higher level of knowledge, skill, and experience to difficult circumstances than is possible for most volunteer mentors. It brings with it the ability to focus on mentoring as the job, rather than mentoring as an avocation, as is the case for all volunteer mentors. Professional mentoring has the potential to offer new ways for people to serve their community in a way that has clear meaning over the long run—helping the next generation succeed.
