Establishing Professional Mentoring Programs as a Critical Part of the Community
摘要
Professional youth mentoring has the potential to expand the positive effects of mentoring by addressing certain areas that, for various reasons, may not be possible through volunteer or natural mentoring. Whether professional mentoring is used to cultivate assets and protective factors in the youth’s life, is used to prevent adverse outcomes (e.g., social isolation, substance misuse), or both, because of the increased capacity of a professional mentor to be present, focused, and serve, the approach has appeal. Most notably, having a full-time professional mentor with adequate training to address key aspects of the life of youth has the potential to provide support in ways a volunteer or natural mentor cannot. This may be particularly true if professional mentors are from the same community as the youth, share similar identities, or/and are intentionally trying to learn about the identities and experiences of the youth that they themselves cannot relate to. In this chapter, the authors propose that several steps need to be taken to ensure that those who work as professional mentors and the organizations that support them are truly promoting social justice among youth and families and are viewed as a trusted and valued institution within their local community.
