Finnish Icehearts is a nongovernmental professional mentoring organization that has been working with children perceived in need of additional support since 1996. The European Commission named the Icehearts mentoring model as a “best practice” in health promotion in 2021. Beginning with one mentor and a group of 15–20 children, this preventive child protection model has spread to 14 municipalities in Finland. Today, the organization employs 70 full-time mentors and who work with more than 1000 children. This chapter reports the results of qualitative interviews with 10 IceHeart mentors. Common themes identified include the following: there are no shortcuts in this work of mentoring, the autonomy and resilience of mentors is key to success, and mentoring is about providing the same human elements that are the basis for the healthy growth of all children. Interviews with mentors also highlighted three characteristics that they deemed essential in their day-to-day work. These build on the themes above, and are persistence, commitment, and independence.
