The Friends of the Children organization has grounded itself in research since the establishment of the first "chapter" in Portland in 1993. A series of early studies on various aspects of the program are reviewed. Each study was conducted by an independent third party, some of whom were contracted by the organization. The most intense period of early research occurred during the 2 years leading up to the submission of an application to the National Institutes of Health to fund the first randomized controlled trial (RCT) of Friends of the Children and focused on specific questions that needed to be answered to prepare to conduct the RCT.
