This chapter provides an overview of the structure and function of local, independent, nonprofit chapters of a mature professional youth mentoring organization, Friends of the Children (FOTC). The work of the organization is conducted through an over 30-year-old, national nonprofit network that comprises a national headquarters in Portland, Oregon, and over 30 independent chapters working in local communities (rural, midsized, and urban) in 43 locations throughout the United States, including partnerships with sovereign tribal nations. Every chapter is owned and operated locally, with a license to implement the FOTC professional mentoring model. Each FOTC chapter works with their local community to ensure that the model is responsive to the unique needs of youth and families facing the greatest obstacles to success in their specific locale. The model’s value proposition includes a professional mentoring approach that is scalable and that can be leveraged to impact conditions that limit opportunity for children and families at the local level.
