This chapter starts by comparing rhetorical production and rhetorical criticism. The chapter considers the relationship between rhetoric and causality, before exploring anti-Black racism as an illustration of rhetorical power. The case study analyzes Martin Luther King’s “Letter From a Birmingham Jail” to show how a rhetorical approach to power offers rhetorical critics a useful set of analytical tools. The chapters concludes by discussing the methodological and ethical challenges of studying rhetorical power in our postmodern context.
