This chapter defines the concept of identification and describes the theoretical development of identification as a tool in rhetorical studies. The chapter introduces various approaches to identification before turning to Colin Kaepernick’s demonstration of peaceful protest by kneeling during the National Anthem to push back against systemic racism in American policing. The chapter concludes with ethical and methodological challenges for using identification in rhetorical criticism.
