Africa is considered the poorest continent on Earth. Despite this, Africa has increasingly borne the brunt of climate change in recent decades. Surprisingly, Africa ranks as the lowest continent in terms of carbon dioxide emissions. However, Africa faces disproportionate impacts from climate change. With approximately 1.522 billion people, many of whom live below the poverty line, Africa is highly vulnerable to climate-related disasters. This vulnerability is exacerbated by inadequate legislation and enforcement of environmental policies, leading to severe health impacts from air pollution, which was responsible for 1.1 million deaths around Africa in 2019.This paper highlights the effects of climate change and air pollution on Africa and how it significantly impacts vulnerable communities. We will present two landmark cases in Africa that address climate change and air pollution to demonstrate how litigations become one of the primary weapons to confront these dual disasters.
