This chapter highlights the rise of community spaces in Pakistan as physical spaces that welcome representatives of counter or anti-state publics to use their spaces for events and occasional deliberation in their cafés. It explores how the earlier manifestations of the public sphere (coffee houses) are returning to Pakistan. Drawing on interviews with the directors of three popular community spaces, this chapter highlights how these community spaces work as vents for the public in Pakistan. While it stresses the importance of physical spaces, it also reflects on how they operate in an otherwise claustrophobic environment. The chapter is intentionally placed as the last chapter, as it aims to suggest that while digital media is increasingly reconfiguring the media landscape of the region, the clandestine publics often frequent community spaces as sanctuaries.
