Process mining encompasses a family of techniques for analyzing organizational processes based on digital trace data. In practice, process mining software is celebrating tremendous success. An ever-increasing number of organizations adopt process mining software, and process mining vendors report record growth rates and market capitalizations. Scholars have also highlighted the potential of process mining for research purposes, but methodological guidance is still developing. This chapter addresses this problem. It introduces the basic concepts and tools for process mining and identifies opportunities and challenges of using those tools for research on organizational processes.
