Paranthropus robustus: Paleoecological Context of an Enigmatic Species
摘要
Paranthropus robustus was the first Paranthropus species to be discovered and named in 1938. In subsequent years, many more specimens have been assigned to the species from various South African sites. Previous reconstructions of its habitat ranged from open and arid to more wooded, with some researchers suggesting that P. robustus was a generalist that consumed both C3 and C4 resources and may have favored more wooded areas. We compared the functional traitFunctional traits structure of P. robustus faunal communities with each other and with those of modern faunal communities from a diversity of habitats to better understand water availability and seasonalitySeasonality of P. robustus sites. Our results indicate that P. robustus likely lived in seasonal habitats with complex vegetation structures and variable surface water availabilities. Even though some sites were reconstructed to have relatively low rainfall, they appeared to have high surface water availability year-round and were sampling wetland environmentsEnvironment.
