Adolescent Pregnancy in Africa: Intersections of Religion, Health, and Development
摘要
This chapter critically examines adolescent pregnancy in Africa through the interconnected lenses of religion, health, and development. It explores how religious beliefs and institutions shape cultural norms and influence access to reproductive health services, often contributing to early pregnancies. The chapter evaluates the health implications of adolescent pregnancy, including physical and mental health outcomes, and investigates the socioeconomic consequences such as educational disruption and intergenerational poverty. It also highlights the role of faith-based organizations in both perpetuating and addressing adolescent pregnancy. By drawing on cross-regional examples and contemporary literature, the chapter proposes culturally sensitive, multi-sectoral strategies for intervention that respect religious traditions while advocating for adolescent sexual and reproductive rights. Ultimately, it argues that sustainable development in Africa requires confronting the religious and cultural frameworks that shape adolescent health outcomes and gender equity.
