Integration of African Traditional Healing Practices to Mainstream Healthcare in South Africa: Insights from Indigenous Knowledge Systems
摘要
For most South Africans, traditional healing practices are still an essential part of their daily life and seen as a part of Indigenous Knowledge that is connected to larger belief systems. Particularly in rural areas, many people turn to traditional healing as the first line of defense since it can be more readily available and reasonably priced. Indigenous South Africans believe that traditional healing methods are more effective for patients than modern healthcare because they employ a holistic approach. Because of these factors, South African’s traditional health practitioners (THPs) want that these practices be incorporated into mainstream healthcare, something that has not effectively occurred and slow progress is seen. Therefore, this chapter looks at the existing academic literature, policy frameworks, and government documents on traditional healing practices and mainstream healthcare as sources of data. Moreover, it examines South Africa’s current state of traditional healing practices and their integration into mainstream healthcare. This was important to see the methods used thus far by the South African government in recognizing the role of THPs and their practices in mainstream healthcare.
